Mokoro on the Kwando River

The uncharted flood plains of Africa

The Kwando river lies to the north and north east of the Okavango Delta. As beautiful as the Okavango Delta, the Kwando area and its river system and tributaries are far less known to travelers to Botswana. The Kwando areas spread out and encompass the Selinda, Linyanti, and Savuti areas. The Kwando River starts in Central Angola, flows southeast to the Zambian border before jutting south to the Caprivi Strip in Namibia. From here the river spreads branches into the Chobe River and also spreads across the Kwando system and Linyanti marshes creating floodplains teeming with wildlife. The area is pristine, largely uninhabited, and its beauty remains relatively undiscovered.

The area is remote and staggeringly beautiful.

A few high-end lodges are hidden in select areas in the Kwando region, and all offer genuinely unique opportunities to experience the African wild in comfort and style.

Great buffalo and elephant migrations take place throughout different times of the year. The area is also one of the last true bastions of the African Wild Dog. Sightings of this endangered canine are frequent.

Best time of year to visit

An abundant wildlife and permanent wetlands mean that one can visit the Kwando region year round. However, sometimes of the year are more favorable owing to the heat and rainfall.

June to August is considered the prime season for travelers. Water flowing down from the Kwando River in Angola reaches the Kwando region during this time, and estuaries open up. This allows visitors to explore a larger area of the Kwando river system by boat. It is also during this time that many animals migrate to the delta allowing for spectacular game viewing opportunities.

September to October are also great months to visit the Kwando. During these slightly hotter months, animals move towards the water source from around the country, and game viewing is sublime.

November to April is considered the rainy season. However, rainfall is generally few and far in-between. Birdwatching during this time is particularly phenomenal.
