Understanding the meditative practices of one of nature’s most magical water cycles
Once a year, a desert becomes an Eden. Follow the six-month breath of water from Angola's highlands into the heart of the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango river system, and particularly the Okavango Delta, is in my mind one of the most mysterious and majestic of all natural phenomena. The complexity of this river pushing flood waters along thousands of kilometres into a desert, where it branches out to fill and transform an arid landscape into a luscious Eden, is just staggering. It’s synchronous and meditational, and I like to think of the Okavango Delta as a pulmonary system taking deep, slow, zen-like breaths once a year — drawing in life, then spreading it out to feed the body.
I strive to understand this wonder, to monitor it, to better grasp its intricacies, and no matter how much I discern, I’m always left astounded by its beauty. So let’s dive into how the meditative breathing flow of water in the Okavango works, how we monitor it, and how — even now — we still have a long, long way to go in understanding it all.
Step 1. Find a quiet place and empty your thoughts.
Where the dark storms gather
Between October and April each year, storms brew over the Atlantic and slowly move into the highlands of Angola, where a huge range of mountains tickle the bottom of cloud formations into hysterics, forcing giant cumulonimbus to piss themselves all over the Angolan water tower. These clouds drop well over a metre of good rain into this remote hinterland. It’s high and cool up there, full of miombo woods and ancient peatlands that suck up the falling water like a sponge, slowly discharging it into small streams that make their way down the tower. Almost nobody goes there, and it’s without doubt the least understood, least visited landscape in Africa. However, without it, we would have no Okavango Delta at all.
From small streams to large bodies
The small streams form into rivers, and two of these do most of the work. The Cubango flows down from the west and drains a catchment of roughly 114,000 km² — roughly the size of the state of Ohio. The Cuito flows eastwards and drains a catchment of 65,000 km², close to the size of Sri Lanka.
Sister rivers begin their varied dance
What’s astonishing is that the two rivers behave nothing alike. The Cubango is the faster of the two: along its western headwaters there’s less peaty land, the slopes are steeper, and the riverbed runs over harder ground, so it releases water quickly. The river is impatient and flashy — it wants to get there fast. The Cuito, which starts on the eastern side of the tower, takes a more enlightened approach. Its headwaters sit in vast peatlands that hold water like a giant sponge, releasing it slowly and steadily over months. Its water runs clear, dark and cold. It’s the Cuito, more than the Cubango, that gives the Delta its extraordinary reliability, and drives the second pulse that pushes water deeper into the Okavango at a steadier rate.
A race of epic proportions
They run south, parallel, for hundreds of kilometres before joining near the Namibian border to become the Okavango River, bringing with them approximately 9.6 km³ of water. Not to be crass, but that’s a fuck-load of water — enough to fill 3.84 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. And still, that pales next to the Zambezi’s 35 km³, or the mighty Congo’s staggering 1,290 km³ released into the ocean each year. Fuck me, the mind boggles.
Back to the Delta: this water travels over 1200km before reaching Mukwe, then flows on towards Botswana.

Step 2. Slowly inhale
The Delta’s first touch of what’s to come
As these rivers meet around Mukwe, they’re slowly inhaled by the Okavango. The journey to the Delta takes around six months. This deep intake of breath draws the water from the Okavango River into the panhandle — so-called because, well, it looks like a panhandle. Not very scientific, but some cartographer somewhere got caught up in kitchen mode, and the name stuck. Name aside, it’s an impressive place: a long, narrow corridor about 15km wide in places, where the Okavango River is still recognisably a river.
And here we can begin to measure
At Rundu and Mohembo we measure stream flow and depth. We get information on river characteristics from further upstream too — Namibia, and Angola’s water tower itself — but it’s here that we derive the truest measurements of what to expect each year.
The water’s pace is determined
The first flood pulse, driven by the Cubango, typically arrives at Mohembo between February and March, with the Cuito’s second pulse following around mid-May. Whatever passes the gauges here is more or less what the Delta gets, minus regional rainfall (more on that later). Everything downstream is predominantly this same, long-travelled water — spreading out, slowing down, evaporating.

Step 3. Draw in that deep breath and make peace with transformation.
A unique phenomenon unfolds
What happens next is a geological anomaly rarely seen anywhere else on earth. The Delta sits within the Okavango Graben, the southernmost expression of the East African Rift System. Tectonic forces are slowly pulling the plates apart, flattening and softening the slope towards the end of the panhandle. This is where the magical chi of the Okavango begins. Having flowed like a river for hundreds of kilometres, the water hits the Gumare fault line — which must hold some serious zen wisdom, because everything passing through finds deeper enlightenment and transcends to a higher state of being. It decides that remaining a river means holding onto too many attachments from its past, and in this moment of clarity, it transforms — shifting from a river into a delta-like natural Eden, spreading out across the desert.

Step 4. Allow the breath to permeate your entire being
A body with a thousand arteries
From here, the water splits into a multitude of channels, crisscrossing to form a monumental wetland. It permeates the desert, converting up to 5000 km² of arid wasteland into a teeming oasis of life and splendour. The first pulse arrives in a wave at the onset of winter — and it’s quite something to see.

The river speaks in sacred tongues
Riverbeds are dry one minute, and the next a small trickle appears followed by a wave of water. In Botswana we call this Leleme la metsi, which translates from Setswana as “the tongue of the water.” That first trickle of water that comes with Leleme, wherever in the Okavango you see it first, is sacred. We wash in it, then collect some in bottles, and it provides luck and protection until the following year.

Step 5. Hold that breath in before slowly exhaling
Vast saturation of the arid land
At this point we’ve received somewhere in the region of 9 to 11 billion cubic metres of water, flowing outwards in every direction. This often builds on another 5 billion or so cubic metres of regional rainfall — and in a good rain year, the pulse hits harder and faster, flowing out to the extremes. In a strong flood year like 2026, water reaches the Boteti River and the Makgadikgadi Pans, and even Lake Ngami, which started filling on 10 August 2026 — the first time since the 2019 floods, and before that, 2011.
The place where water is held
The Okavango Delta is, technically, a terminal sink. Once water arrives, it stays — more than 96% of it never leaves. The slow exhale happens through evaporation off open water and transpiration through papyrus, reeds and riverine trees. Around 2% trickles out as surface flow down the Boteti, and less than 2% seeps away underground. The Delta is not a reservoir. Nothing is stored. It’s a breath — drawn in over six months, held briefly, and released almost entirely back to the atmosphere.

Understanding the risk of contamination
Because of this, any contamination that arrives is there to stay. That’s why we fight so hard against anything that threatens to pollute the Okavango — oil, gas and mineral exploration, agricultural run-off from farming upstream in Namibia and Angola. I don’t love dwelling on this while I’m meant to be talking meditation, but I’ve written an academic paper on exactly what oil and gas exploration would do to this ecosystem, if you’re interested.

Step 6. Breathe out, and let it settle
Nothing is permanent
Nothing about the Okavango is permanent. Every year the channels move — sometimes majorly. Systems that were the main artery a century ago run dry today; others open up. Camps that were once water camps become land camps, and decades later, water camps again. When someone tells you a concession is “a water area,” the honest answer is: yes, but only for now.
That impermanence is exactly what makes the Okavango Delta so magical — and so worth experiencing now. I’ll fight tooth and nail against any man-made threat to it, because I don’t want to see it disappear on our watch. But within a planetary timeframe, the truth is the Delta isn’t going to be around forever. It’s too ethereal, too magical, too divine — a flower blooming on the earth’s timescale that will eventually fade. For us, though, it’s happening right now, in our lifetime. Let’s take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to witness it.
