Located approximately 20 kilometers upriver from the mighty Victoria Falls, Chundu Island Lodge is something of an anomaly. It is beautiful and tranquil and when you get there one feels as though they have been transported into their own idyllic Zambezi adventure. This is the area where David Livingstone travelled through, and you can still feel traces of the old-world safari adventure in the area. Elephants roam across the banks of the river, which are a buzz of wildlife and beauty.
Chundu Island is a private island and has idyllic white sand beaches that stretch out into the Zambezi channel that flows past. While these beaches look incredibly inviting, you will want to refrain from swimming as the waters are filled with hippos and crocodiles which are more safely viewed from a distance. The guides are all incredibly professional at Chundu Island and they will show you the ropes and take care of you.
The lodge itself is comfortable and offers a number of activities. It’s also a great family option. All rooms are tented, but lavishly decorated with hard wooden floors.
Activities around Chundu include game drive, game walks, fishing, and boating excursions. There are also daily trips to the Falls included. During these day trips you will be able to explore the falls as well as take a walk around the small town of Victoria Falls itself. There are also a number of options that extend onto the Zambian side of the falls such as a visit to Devils Pool.
This is a great option for family groups, and for those who want to get out of the hustle bustle of Victoria Falls. As it is quite removed from Victoria Falls and quite deep in the Zambezi National Park, the game viewing is more exclusive. This means that you will not see too many other game vehicles while on game drives in that area of the park.
