Duba Plains camp is run by National Geographic Resident Explorers. So you know it’s the real deal. The camp is 5 star and luxurious, and it brings visitors into close contact with wildlife.

The camp is situated in the heart of the NG 23, or the Duba Concession. It’s a strikingly beautiful area of the Okavango, and the wildlife is unmatched. Duba Plains has 5 luxury tents that are reminiscent of an old timey 1920’s safari style. But they take it even further. All rooms have private pools, beautiful Zanzibar doors, leadwood flooring, copper bathtabs, and more.

Wifi is available in the rooms.

This lodge is one of the most iconic and luxurious lodges in Africa, if not the world. Well worth a visit.

Location
Quick Facts
  • Rooms: 5 bespoke suites plus a separate 2-bedroom Duba Plains Suite (6 accommodations total)
  • Location: Duba Plains Reserve (NG23), Okavango Delta — the private concession founded and run by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, who’ve lived there for nearly 20 years
  • Known for: the “swamp lions” — prides that hunt by swimming across channels after huge herds of lechwe and buffalo (subject of the Jouberts’ documentaries, including Relentless Enemies); also strong sightings of African wild dogs, leopards and elephants, plus 200+ bird species
  • Activities: open-vehicle game drives, guided bush walks, mokoro and boating (water-dependent/seasonal), a Young Explorers programme for kids (bushcraft, tracking, animal calls)
  • Combines well with: Selinda Camp (also Great Plains), known for its large elephant herds, for a rounded Botswana itinerary
Personal Thoughts on Duba Plains

Duba Plains is quite an experience. This was Dereck and Beverly Joubert’s home base in the Delta, where they lived for nearly 20 years, and that personal investment shows in every detail. The “swamp lion” phenomenon here (lion prides that swim across channels to hunt huge buffalo and lechwe herds) is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in Africa, and it’s the reason this place has been the subject of multiple National Geographic documentaries. For clients who are serious about predator sightings and want a story behind their safari, not just a beautiful room, this is one of the best options in the country.
