Refurbished in 2020, Duma Tau is a relatively new premier camp from the Wilderness Safari lodge portfolio.

Located in the Kwando region to the north west of the Okavango Delta, Duma Tau camp is nestled along the banks of the Osprey Lagoon, close to the Savute Channel. The camp consists of ten en-suite tented rooms (eight twin, and two family). The tents are exquisitely decorated in an olden day safari-esque style. The views over the passing river are breathtaking. The family orientated camp is for the more adventurous, and game sightings even within the camp are common place.

The elephant population in the area is staggering, and game drives and walks around the area afford viewers with an up-close-and-personal experience with these majestic animals.

The camp also has a star bed which allows visitors to sleep under the wide open skys, a tryly unforgettable African experience.

But perhaps best of all, is the floating firepit jetty for which the camp is well known. It’s an unbeatable place to receive the sunset.

Location
Quick Facts
  • Rooms: 8 tented suites, each with a private plunge pool, set along wooden walkways beside two ancient elephant corridors near Osprey Lagoon
  • Rebuild: DumaTau was completely torn down and rebuilt from scratch in 2020 — not a renovation but an entirely new camp, designed in an “explorer tented” style that nods to Botswana’s age of exploration, using reclaimed timber throughout
  • Location: private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, near the source of the Savuti Channel — run by Wilderness
  • Activities: day and night game drives, walking safaris, boat cruises (seasonal/water-dependent), plus a well-regarded hide near the Savuti Channel source; at least 3 nights recommended to cover both land and water activities
  • Distinctive touches: “curiosity boxes” built into each suite with artefacts and info on local wildlife and history; spot-cooling for hot afternoons
Personal Thoughts on Duma Tau

Duma Tau is a real showcase for what Wilderness can do when they rebuild a camp from the ground up — the 2020 rebuild turned it into one of the most architecturally striking camps in the Linyanti, and the elephant-corridor positioning means you genuinely get animals wandering through camp on a regular basis. That said, I’d flag one honest caveat to clients: wildlife sightings here aren’t at their best during the rainy/green season. Like much of the Linyanti and Savuti area, game disperses widely once the rains fill up smaller pans across the region, so the concentrated sightings this camp is known for are really a dry-season phenomenon. Still, it’s quite an extraordinary camp. They’ve got the most impressive floating peer I’ve seen in Botswana. It’s pretty amazing for an evening sun down and gin and tonic.
