Kwetsani belongs to Wilderness Safaris, and is one of our favourite camps in the Okavango. In terms of location, it is nestled in the middle of the Jao concession, and can only be reached by boat during the wet season. It surrounded by jackalberry, palms, and mangosteen and figtrees.

The camp has five tree house tents that are remincent of the ewoks. It is a truly beautiful camp and the views from the rooms over the flood plains are extraordinary.

Owing to the remoteness of the camp, wildlife in the area is phenomenal. During the wet season, game viewing is done from boats and mokoros, or drives around Hundu island.

Personal Thoughts on Kwetsani

Kwetsani belongs to the Jao Collection. They used to feature under the portofilio of Wilderness Safaris, who managed their marketing. However, the owners of the Jao Collection (the Kays family) decided to go their own way. And I am glad that they did as their portofilio really is unique. Martin Kays is a mate, and he’s poured a huge amount of care into what the new camp has become. The original treehouse-style Kwetsani ran for 26 years before it was completely rebuilt, and I think the timing and the result were worth the wait. Reopening this June with just five suites and a family suite, it’s smaller and more considered than a lot of what’s going up in the Delta right now, and going fully solar fits with how Martin thinks about these camps long-term.

For me it’s as much about trusting the people behind a place as the wildlife or the room count. Knowing Martin’s involved gives me real confidence in how it’s run and where it’s headed.
